This type of steel, used in reinforced concrete structures, is in the form of wire or bars. Stirrups (Khâmout) are transverse reinforcements tied around longitudinal and main bars in footings and beams to resist shear and torsion forces. Additionally, rebars arranged in a grid or coil to resist applied forces are referred to as Mat or Mesh (Hassiri).

Definition of Reinforcement Work (Armatour-Bandi)

Reinforcement work refers to the arrangement and placement of rebars inside the concrete and is considered one of the most critical and sensitive executive points in concrete structures. Since all tensile forces in concrete structures are borne by the reinforcement, extreme precision is required during execution. This process requires specialized workers and supervisory engineers. Supervisory engineers are responsible for direct and continuous oversight from the foundation reinforcement stage until the completion of concrete pouring.

Key Points in Reinforcement Work

The distance between stirrups should be 20 cm (approximately one hand span).

Stirrups are secured to longitudinal rebars using tie wires.

Rebar cutting must be performed using specialized rebar cutters; the use of oxy-fuel (blowtorch) cutting should be avoided.

Rusted rebars or those coated in oil must not be used; any surface contamination must be cleaned before installation.

Rebars should not be bent at temperatures below 5°C. Bending must be done cold using mechanical devices.

The distance between the rebars and the formwork surface (concrete cover) must be at least 2.5 cm to ensure proper protection.

Stirrups are responsible for holding longitudinal bars and preventing them from buckling under tension; therefore, stirrup placement regulations must be strictly followed.

Principles and Regulations for Bending Rebars

To maintain mechanical properties and expected strength, the following principles must be observed:

Hammering is not permitted for bending rebars.

The minimum diameter of the bending mandrel must be selected according to the steel type.

Unbending and rebending for reshaping is not allowed.

Bending speed should be chosen based on the steel type and ambient temperature.

Bending must be performed cold, and the bars must be completely straight before bending.

Rebars are bent by hand in small workshops and by machines in large-scale projects.

Types of Rebar Splices

The following methods are used to connect rebars:

Welded Splices

Lap Splices

End-Bearing Splices

Mechanical Splices (Couplers)

Welded Splice:

Connecting two rebars via welding requires specific conditions.
